KETAAKETI SPOWC English School, located in the temple district of Kathmandu, Tilganga, was founded in 2006 and serves as the administrative center for all SPOWC projects. Here, children from first to fifth grade receive free primary education, along with teaching materials, daily school meals, and, increasingly, medical support.
The students come from the adjacent slum, where their families live under difficult conditions. This is one of the criteria for admission, ensuring that these children have a chance for quality education. The children take pride in their achievements and enjoy the sense of community. The teaching staff is highly committed and maintains close contact with the families.
All of the teachers and staff have worked diligently to improve this school, not only as paid employees but also as social workers. Over the years, the number of slum children without access to education in the Pashupati neighborhood has decreased as more children have been able to attend school.
The school would not be what it is today without the engagement and dedication of the social workers and teachers.
I have been working as a Hotel Manager, but the work as a social worker is what satisfies me and gives meaning to my life. Educating children is my greatest achievement. Additionally, seeing women succeed in their businesses through microfinancing and become independent brings me happiness.
"When choosing to do social services, may you prioritize helping children first."
"I have been working here for 15 years. Throughout these years, I have learned that education truly changes people's perspectives. When I was a new teacher, it was very difficult to convince children and their parents of the importance and necessity of education. Over time, I also came to understand why it was so hard for them to grasp this concept. Convincing them was one of my biggest lessons at the school."
"We should always help poor or uneducated children if we are capable to do it."
"I am working here because I believe that my small contribution will help brighten their future."
"Working at Ketaaketi School has been an empowering experience for me. I encourage all Nepalese women to step forward and work for both themselves and their families."
